Context and motivation of the project - legislative background/obligations, institutional policy, institutional structures

The Mobile School is a mobile school created by the Belgian organization Mobile School for the needs of children living and working on the street and do not have access to the school environment. It is an innovative tool for the job in the street (street work) which main objective is the development of self-esteem of children. On the one hand there is the educational part of the mobile school and on the other, work on sentimental approach of children. This is a moving vehicle with the hands, a box with sliding blackboards supported on wheels and on the educational and entertaining panel apply.

The program aims to find children who experience social exclusion and rejection, through a universal acceptance and action to support themselves and their families.

Description of the target group

Gypsies and Roma who have dropped out school or have never been to school and are living / working on the street.

Staff (selection, evaluation, training, promotion)

All those who are involved in the program are trained psychologists, social workers, teachers and counselors with experience in socially vulnerable groups.

Methodological approach, activities implemented

The main goal is through methodical assistance in the Roma communities, to be close to children who experience social exclusion and rejection through an action of universal acceptance and support themselves and their families. Along with interventions in the settlements, the Mobile School through ARSIS visited schools in primary and secondary education and organised workshops for students with topics such as children's rights, racism, child labor, violence. Finally the Mobile School participate in social and cultural events in the city and organizing awareness workshops in public places to raise awareness of the general public on issues related to child protection.

Results and impact - data of program internal/ external evaluation, beneficiary satisfaction, the impact of the didactical practices at individual and institutional level

While early intervention attendance of children in schools of formal education was only 30% with many cases of school dropouts in 2013 the number of children playing with mobile school, attending primary schools and kindergartens in the neighborhood rose to 80%.

Conclusions, lessons learned

Very important work that helps to prevent dropouts in groups of Roma.

Directions of further development/ Transferability, replicability

this initiative could be usefully if applied to most areas where there are children who live in poverty or who have left school.
