The APROPA (professional and academic retraining and guidance measures) conference, organised by the Department of Education, aims to introduce the public to the city’s different educational services and resources. The conference places emphasis on the importance of lifelong learning and is therefore based around academic and professional guidance processes. The intention is to create a local meeting point for academic and professional dissemination, information and guidance aimed at young people, the city’s different social and educational agents and the general public.
Aims of the project
a) Help attendees to define their academic and professional objectives more clearly; b) provide information, materials and resources for defining training routes, job counselling and job seeking
Target group
- students
- ESL
- parents
- Guidance practitioners
- Teachers
Description of the target group
Students in compulsory secondary education (ESO), training and insertion programmes (PFI), baccalaureate studies and vocational training. Families, teachers, educational professionals and the general public.
Methodological approach, activities implemented
The conference is divided into two parts: a morning session, aimed and at the city’s ESO, PFI and intermediate-level vocational training students and their families who are in need of support, guidance or tutoring as regards their studies. The second session, focused on both academic and professional aspects, is aimed at baccalaureate and intermediate-level vocational training students and the general public, and offers information on the post-compulsory education and vocational training available in the municipality. Both sessions included informative talks, with information points and personalised assessment and information, both on the centres themselves as well as of a more general nature, in addition to workshops where young people can gain first-hand knowledge of new professional, training and employment opportunities, practical demonstrations, etc.
Results and impact - data of program internal/ external evaluation, beneficiary satisfaction, the impact of the didactical practices at individual and institutional level
The first APROPA conference was held in April 2015. It was a success in terms of participation, in large part thanks to coordination with the educational fabric of the city, particularly with secondary schools. It is not yet been possible to make an overall evaluation, but some of the guidance proposals have been assessed and improvements are being put forward for future editions of the conference.
Conclusions, lessons learned
• The need to offer information and resources to the public in order to define their academic and professional pathway. • The need to involve any agents offering information. • The need to operate as a network.
Directions of further development/ Transferability, replicability
The APROPA initiative may be replicated in any municipality with similar characteristics, although it is advisable to always secure the collaboration of the city’s training organisations, formal education centres and the Council.
